How to Install Hurricane Window Film
A layer of Hurricane window film placed on your home's windows will prevent shattering from the damaging winds of hurricanes, tornadoes or other severe storms. Hurricane window film bonds with the glass so it resists breaking from high winds or the impact caused by flying objects. On your largest windows it may be easier to apply hurricane window film with the aid of a helper.
Materials Needed:
In addition to the Hurricane window film itself, you should be sure to have all of these materials on hand:
• spray bottle (with a soapy solution recommended by the film manufacturer)
• razor blade
• rubber squeegee
• lint-free cloths
• measuring tape,
• metal ruler or straightedge
Measure Windows
Most manufacturers will recommend that the Hurricane window film be cut to dimensions larger than the glass so it can be trimmed with a razor upon application. If you are not confident (cocky) in your ability to match the dimensions exactly, this is a safe way to proceed.
Once your measurements are complete, measure the film with the adhesive backing still attached. Mark the corners and use the razor and metal ruler to cut the piece of film into the dimensions you require.
Clean the Windows
Windows must be squeaky clean, free of dirt and grease or the film will not adhere to the glass properly. You can use your usual window cleaner and a lint-free cloth to clean the windows. You can apply the Hurricane window film once the window has been cleaned and allowed to dry.
Film Application
Spray the soapy solution recommended by the Hurricane window film manufacturer on the window liberally. When the film is applied, this will allow you to make small corrections to the position of the film on the window, and it will make your installation far easier.
Remove the protective backing from the film beginning at one corner and peel it all the way down. Try to avoid letting the film stick together.
Place the tacky side (where the backing was) against the glass. It should slide around on the soapy spray easily. Work it into the upper right corner of the windowpane and then position it squarely on the window, lining up the edges.
Spray more of the soapy water on the outside of the film and use the squeegee to remove any existing wrinkles or air bubbles. Adjust the Hurricane window film into its final position. If you elected to leave excess materials at the edges, trim with your razor knife at this time.
Soak the film with the soapy water again and use the squeegee to remove any air bubbles and to work any of the remaining water underneath down and out through the bottom edge. Allow the film to dry. This may take 15 days or more based on the product. Refer to the manufactures instructions before washing the windows
